Oaxaca Mushroom Adventure

July 26- August 2, 2023

Explore the cloud forests of Oaxaca, Mexico with Dennis Sharmahd and Jess Starwood.

The seven day Oaxaca Mushroom Adventure, led by mushroom book author and wild foods chef Jess Starwood and botany expert Dennis Sharmahd, is here and open for registration. We explore the cloud forests of mainland Mexico at elevations from 8,000-10,000 feet in search of wild mushrooms and learn about the local culture and customs with the fungi. We will also enjoy the delicious foods and drinks that the area is known for such as moles, tlayudas, tamales, and mezcal. We will hike among the conifers, broadleaf trees, ferns and agaves with our guides to find a variety of mushroom species and learn about their edibility and traditional uses. A traditional tamazcal (sweat lodge) and medicine ceremony is offered, but is optional. We will spend our time in the Cuajimoloyas and San Mateo Rio Hondo areas along with some time in the city of Oaxaca.
