Join experienced botanist and herbalist Dennis Sharmahd along with herbalist, forager and chef Jess Starwood on a seven day adventure to southern Baja California Sur, Mexico, to explore wild foods and herbal medicines this unique yet diverse region offers.
The Plants (& Mushrooms): There are many unique, rare and endemic plants that inhabit this region. From the multitude of edible cacti fruits such as Pitaya Agria Stenocereus gummosus, and Pitaya Dulce Lemaireocereus thurberi, unique fruits such as Desert Honey Persimmon Diospyros intricata, Melon de Coyote Ibervillea sonorae, Wild Plum Cyrtocarpa edulis, and Baja Black Sapote Diospyros californica, plus the multitude of herbs Damiana Turnera diffusa, Copal Bursera empanada & hindsiana, Baja Bouillon Bush Cordia curassavica, Desert Passionfruit Passiflora arida, plus the low-tannin Encino Negro Quercus brandegeei for some acorn pancakes. We will seek to find as many as possible throughout our adventure. There is also a possibility of finding wild mushrooms as well if the season allows for it.
The Food: We will eat fresh local, organic foods directly from farms and eco-villages that we visit, along with unique and unusual edible plants as we adventure through the landscape. Herbalist, forager and chef Jess Starwood will prepare and serve healthy, plant-based meals each day featuring the local flavors and ingredients.
The Adventures: As we explore the various natural spaces to look for plants and mushrooms, we will also be visiting breathtaking waterfalls and canyons, crystal clear natural rock pools, unique eco-farms, secluded hot springs and relax on pristine beaches. We will also likely see a variety of wildlife including crested caracaras (also known as the Mexican eagle), iguanas, lizards, and many others.
The Accommodations: We will be staying at rustic cabins nestled in the canyons of southern Baja, each with their own rooftop viewing deck that provides an incredible spot to catch the morning desert sunrise. They are located within walking distance of spectacular waterfalls. These cabins will serve as our base camp for the duration of our trip. Single occupancy available upon request.
